Alex Kolozsy

 

Biography

 

Dr Alex Sándor Kolozsy, C.D.V.A. Hungarian born in 1938 Kolozsvár Transylvania, (belongs to Rumania since 1920). As a child in 1944 refugee to Hungary. As a young Freedom Fighter in 1956 refugee to Holland, then migrated to Australia end of 1958.

 


EDUCATION
Képzőművészeti Academy of Art, Győr, Hungary 1952-1956. Rembrandt Academy of Art, Eindhoven, the Netherlands 1956-1958.

 


COLLECTIONS
Kolozsy is a leading Australian Sculptor. He is represented in the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; Australian Parliament (ACT); Buckingham Palace (UK), Presidential Library Collection (USA) ; Stockman's Hall of Fame (Queensland) and the National Museum and Art Gallery, Papua New Guinea. Municipal, public and corporate collections in USA, UK and Europe including Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest Hungary; Esztergom Basilica, Hungary; Peoples Academy of Exiled Hungarians, Lakitelek Hungary; Roman Catholic Church, Győr-Ménfőcsanak; Árpád Academy, Cleveland Ohio USA; Holt Maros, Alsó Csernáton,Transylvania-Rumania; Bezerédy Muzeum,Győr-Ménfőcsanak; Bonyhád Hungary Town Square; Sao Paulo Brazil and Portolo Valley College, San Francisco, USA.

 


AWARDS
He has been awarded numerous art prizes for his sculpture, including the prestigious Arpad Academy´s International Gold Medal (1981) for "Spirit of Sydney" and has won honours not only in Australia but also the USA, UK and Europe. He has received sculpture medals from Mosman (1989), Holroyd (1988), Marrickville (1988) and Shell Harbour (1988) Councils and the Captain Cook Bicentennial Committee (1970).

 


HONOURS
In 1990-1991 he was appointed Artisan in Residence at the University of Western Sydney, Hawkesbury Richmond Campus. Artisan in Residence at Blacktown City Show Society Inc since 1990. Conferred a Cultural Doctorate in Visual Arts and Sculpture from the World University Roundtable, Arizona USA 1991.

 


MEMBERSHIPS
He was an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society of NSW (1998-2003), Member of the International Sculptors Society USA, Member of Portrait Artists Australia, since 2003, Committee Member 2006/2011.Member of Sculptors Society NSW 1963/1985, renewed Membership 2007.

 


COMMISSIONS
Kolozsy is primarily known for his fine limited edition bronzes, portrait busts and monumental sculpture commissions. Recently received a Commission in 2011 from Our Lady of Lebanon College at Harris Park to create 1m 70cm Jesus, with seven children of various sizes painted plaques, for unveiling February 2012. He completed the sculpture of a life size Military Nurse, World War Two, for Merrylands RSL, 2009 and has recast their three soldiers in silicone bronze.

 


In recent years he has completed several important projects such as "THE WILD ONE" Johnny O'’Keefe Monument at Coolangatta; the Holy Chalice and Twelve Disciples for Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, Harris Park; Graf Dr. Albert Wass de Czege larger than life size bust sited at Bonyhad Hungary; Bas relief of the late John Galombós for St. George Soccer Club; Italian/Australian Friendship Memorial at Cowra NSW; The late Mr. Robert Johnson AO for Toyota; Kokoda plaque for Epping RSL Victoria and Canberra ACT; Constance for South Africa; Lexus for Toyota Elite Milestone Achievement; The Gladiators, Parramatta Leagues Club; Nimrod for Assyrian Association; Mr. John Saunders AO Westfield Founder, Terrace Towers Sydney; Christ Victorious St. Brigids Cathedral Dubbo; HMS Sirius bas relief for Mosman Municipal Bicentennial, bronze copies presented to Norfolk Island and Isle of Wight UK; RM Williams , Stockman’'s Hall of Fame; Arthur Todd Holroyd and Caroline Chisholm and the Pioneer Woman Monument Jessie Street Gardens, Bicentennial projects 1988; the late Maurice Blackmore for Blackmores Laboratories, bronze copies to New Zealand and UK.

 


RESTORATION
Stations of the Cross, 14 bas reliefs for Maronite Catholic Church, Harris Park, 2011. Jesus and John the Baptist for Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church Harris Park 2006; RSL Memorial at Merrylands RSL 2009 and before in 1996. Winged Victory for Marrickville Council 1988

 


WORK IN PROGRESS
The project of "Friends of Nurragingy Monument Committee" the 3 metre tall sculpture of Nurragingy 1820 , sculptured 2000 and 2001, to become the First and Biggest RECONCILIATION Monument at Blacktown. But became a political football and due to lack of finance, the production has stopped.

 


EXHIBITIONS
Kolozsy has staged over twenty solo shows which include "Saga of Humanity" at T& G Gallery, presented by Australian Opera Auditions Committee; "Spirit of Bennelong", which was a tribute to the Performing Arts, at the Sydney Opera House Exhibition Hall. Most recently he has exhibited "Phenomenon" at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, and at the 1997 Royal Easter Show in Sydney, presented by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW. Featured at Blacktown City Council Acquisitive Art Exhibition, as well as David Jones Sydney City Gallery and the University of Western Sydney, Richmond; Gallery 96 at Katoomba; Moulton Gallery at Mosman. Bowerbird Gallery, Katoomba; Dural Art Galleries. Royal Easter Show 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011. Exhibited with Sculptors Society, at various Sydney venues during 2008 to 2011.

 


SPECIAL HONOURS
On 23rd October 2011, during the visit of Dr. Zsolt Semjén, Deputy Prime Minister of Hungary, A Diploma of Appreciation was presented in recognition of Kolozsy'’s contribution as a young Freedom Fighter in October 1956, against Communism and Russian oppression! During his recent overseas journey,to his native Hungary, in August 2010 he has received three awards for sculpturing, first from Mayor Zsolt Borkai in Győr, then from András Gangl, Leading Representative, Member of Parliament, in Ménfőcsanak and from the Mayor of Bonyhád. In 2006, his life size sculpture "ENLIGHTENMENT" was selected for Sculpture by the Sea 10 Year Anniversary and two bronze sculptures were exhibited in Sculpture Indoors.

 


MOST RECENTLY
Unveiling of the portrait bust of Sheila Sharp, ex-President of Hawkesbury Art Society, which was sculptured during a Demonstration of portrait sculpture at Windsor. Portrait sculpture of Tom Bass AO, for Kolozsy Emeritus Master Class at Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School 2007. Selected for short list for Ray Price Memorial Monument at Parramatta Leagues Club. Sculpturing portrait bust of Paul Ashton Delprat, Artist and Director of the Julian Ashton Art School at The Rocks and Mosman. By Invitation, part of International Sculpture Competition, 99 sculptors, selected on Shortlist of 10 for St. George’'s Cathedral Perth WA. Shortlisted in three, for Vietnamese Boat People Monument at Bankstown.
